Camberwell Townhouses
LOCATION : CAMBERWELL, VICTORIA
STATUS : TOWN PLANNING
An ambitious plan to develop a vacant parcel of land behind a row of commercial shops presented a challenge and an opportunity to add residential density to this neighbourhood pocket without impacting the community’s beloved neighbourhood character.
Sited on a commercial allotment within a general residential zone, the design outcome for the townhouses has to not only be considerate to the well-established neighbouring dwellings, but contribute and strengthen the identity of the neighbourhood centre through high quality architectural design.
A modest but efficient design was crafted to maximise utility of the site. A clear distinction between the existing shop buildings and the proposed dwellings was made to ensure that each building retained their own street and visual identity.
The selection of external finishes and materials were curated to be sympathetic to the surrounding local visual aesthetic. A push to incorporate ‘vertical planting’ was seen as an integral part of the overall design; not just to soften the volume of the new building but to promote the cultivation of small urban gardens in small-scale living.
