LOCATION : PORT MELBOURNE, VICTORIA
STATUS : UNDER CONSTRUCTION
The owners of this heritage-listed Fowler-designed house, located in the famed Fishermans Bend Estate, wanted a sanctuary for their family yet still be able to enjoy the amenities that the nearby beach has to offer.
In essence our design porposal is for a beach house but one that functions well in the context of surburbia. The design process was also an exercise in sustainable design within the constraints of a small-sized allotment typical of homes of that era and area.
The orientation of the new extension relied heavily on practical passive solar design - maximising natural daylight into living spaces and facilitating good air flow throughout the buildings. The introduction of multiple courtyards, a rooftop terrace, and a transformable indoor/outdoor verandah collectively add functional value to the overall house, while counteracting the inefficencies inherited by the original pre-cast heritage building.
