LOCATION : BALWYN NORTH, VICTORIA
STATUS : SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Tucked away in a quiet area of Balwyn’s residential pocket is an irregularly shaped corner allotment with the land having a pronounced North-South slope. We were commissioned to demolish the existing cottage house and transform the site to house a contemporary home with ample outdoor space for a young family of four.
Given the nature of the site, our strategy was to reconfigure the family’s functional spaces to increase utility and have rooms naturally lit. This involved the employment of ‘break-out’ green spaces through the use of sheltered courtyards which introduce pockets of greenery into the house whilst still maintaining privacy.
Taking advantage of the site’s slope, private bedrooms are stacked on top of the lower-level living areas, enabling northern sunlight to flood these communal areas naturally. The main entry and double-car carport face the main road as single storey structure; respecting the street scale and neighbourhood character.
